The study abroad trend is expanding globally, and its mobility of students is diversifying. Yet, in Japan, a similar trend cannot be found. Although the governmental efforts are recognizable, the impact is still limited. There are many possible explanations for this; one of the influential causes seems to be the overflow of information from Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) available online. Considering that there are more than 18,000 HEIs all over the world, students appeared to be overwhelmed with handling all the information by themselves, therefore, the role of the agency would become crucial. However, as for Japan, they do not seem to work properly. To explore the current situation more deeply, this study interviewed seven Japanese students who have studied for a higher educational degree above the undergraduate program outside of Japan, through the use of phenomenological philosophy. Along with theses interviews, this study also audited the website; StudyPortals.com, which would be useful for those Japanese students when deciding their best-matched university program from around the world. The audit process was implemented through the digital marketing strategy, to understand the user-experience and the online presence of StudyPortals. By comparing the outcomes from both pieces of research, the findings unveiled that there are several prospective suggestions for the website StudyPortals.com and its group sites, in tandem with the general overview of the mutually complementary relationship between the agency in Japan and StudyPortals.com. Those will be further discussed in Chapter 6: Conclusion.
